This chapter provides information about the Cisco MC3800 series of multiservice access concentrators. The flagship product of the MC3800 family, the MC3810, is featured. The Cisco MC3810 is a compact, cost-efficient multiservice access device which integrates voice, data and video traffic over a variety of services. The Cisco MC3810 product utilizes Cisco IOS routing to provide superior performance and unmatched interface handling. Cisco`s proven switching and routing technologies allow you to design networks that integrate legacy data, Ethernet, analog or digital voice, fax and video into a common communications network that significantly reduces network costs. The Cisco MC3810 series is designed to scale from low-speed leased-line environments up to 56 Kbps to 2.048 Mbps Frame Relay and T1/E1 ATM networks with a simple software change. The Cisco MC3810 will also work with a full range of Cisco routers and switches, so you can enjoy the benefits of a single end-to-end networking solution. Benefits such as reduced equipment costs, improved performance, and centralized management make the combined Cisco backbone and Cisco MC3810 solution unique. The Cisco MC3810 supports either analog or digital voice connections. The analog configuration allows 1 to 6 ports of analog voice. When configured for digital operation, the Cisco MC3810 will support up to 24 channels of compressed voice. The Cisco MC3810 flexibility enables it to be deployed within public and private networks and supports a variety of network services and applications. Frame Relay Services Second only to lease-line services in world-wide revenue, Frame Relay continues to attract business minded network managers as the transport service of choice. The MC3810 provides all of the features which you expect from Frame Relay, savings, reliability, flexibility and simplicity. The services available in Cisco IOS make the MC3810 ideally suited for remote or branch office support of traditional Frame Relay services for data as well as voice over Frame Relay. ATM Services A change in the Cisco IOS software is all that is required for the MC3810 to support full feature, high quality T1/E1 ATM services. The MC3810 supports non-real time and real time VBR (variable bit rate), CBR (constant bit rate) and UBR (unspecified bit rate) service classes. Voice, fax and data are transported over ATM using AAL5 (VBR). Structured CBR support is provided for streaming video such as MPEG from a video codec. The MC3810 also performs gatekeeper services for H.323 video over ATM sessions, insuring the highest quality of service for multimedia conferences. Enterprise Network Access Ideal for connecting branch offices and remote sites to the corporate backbone, the MC3810 supports legacy data, voice, video, and IP data traffic with "plug and play" ease of deployment. And because it runs on the Cisco IOS software platform, the MC3810 ensures delivery of network services and network applications while providing a scalable migration path. Integrated Access Services With backbone integration capabilities, the Cisco MC3810 offers service providers an opportunity to provide their enterprise customers with access to public Frame Relay and managed ATM T1/E1 services for voice, video, and data traffic. Service providers can offer customers the option of leasing or purchasing the unit, or they can offer the MC3810 as part of a complete, managed solution. The Cisco MC3810 can be mounted on a wall in the same location as your telephone or networking equipment. It can also sit on a table top. The unit is fixed in configuration but includes the flexibility of factory options. All Cisco MC3810s come standard with two 5-in-1 Universal Serial Connectors, a single 10BaseT Ethernet port, a RJ-45 asynchronous serial auxiliary port for modem access and a RJ-45 asynchronous serial console port for local configuration. The following options are available on the Cisco MC3810 multiservice access concentrator:
6 port analog voice modules (AVM)
Any combination of analog personality modules (APM) daughter cards designated as FXS, FXO or E&M
Voice compression modules (VCM) in high or low density models
T1/E1 digital voice module (DVM) for connection to a digital PBX or channel bank
Basic Rate Interface (BRI) voice module (BVM) for connection to a digital PBX
T1/E1 Multi-Flex Trunk Module with built in CSU/DSU and optional BRI back-up for data
RS-366 signaling interface video dialing module (VDM) for video ATM services
The Cisco MC3810 uses two types of replaceable or upgradeable memory; DRAM memory and Flash memory. Both types of memory are implemented with SIMMs. Each Cisco MC3810 has two SIMM sockets, one for DRAM and one for Flash memory. The standard configuration includes 32 MB of DRAM and 8 MB of Flash memory which is upgradeable to 16 MB. For guidelines on how to order the proper amount of memory to support different IOS Images, refer to the following table:
The Cisco MC3810 can be configured at the factory with either an internal, auto-ranging 100 to 240 VAC unit using a standard IEC 320 input connector or a -48 to -72 VDC auto-ranging power supply. A redundant power supply connector option is also available. A continuously operating cooling fan is built into the chassis.
