Cisco IOS Software Release General Information

The goal of a Major Release is to deliver stable, high quality software for customers` production networks. To ensure stability, no new feature or platform support is added to a Major Release after its First Commercial Shipment (FCS). Scheduled maintenance releases contain only bug fixes for the supported feature/platform set.

General Deployment:

When a Major Release is deemed appropriate for general, unconstrained use in customers` networks, it is said to have reached General Deployment (GD).

Limited Deployment:

A Major Release is said to be in the "Limited Deployment" phase of its life cycle during the period between FCS and General Deployment.

Early Deployment Releases (ED) as a group are based on Major Releases of Cisco IOS Software. ED Releases are a vehicle to quickly deliver new functionality, addressing the need for early availability of product. These Releases provide new technologies for customers to deploy in a limited manner in their networks.

12.0 is a unification release, bringing together functionality from 11.1CA, 11.2, 11.3 releases.

11.3 FCS January 1998. 11.3 is a short lived release, and will never achieve GD.

11.2 FCS 10/14/96. Achieved GD on 4/20/98. 11.2 will have an extended life, with end of sales planned Q1` 2000.

12.0 T

Based on 12.0 Release and is delivering new features and functionality.

11.3 WA

Cisco IOS Release 11.3WA for the Route Switch Module, Cisco 7500,7200 and 4x00 routers contains support for the NetFlow Feature Card for the Catalyst 5000 Supervisor III. The NetFlow Feature Card provides Multilayer switching for the Catalyst Series of switches at millions of packets per second.

11.3 NA

Based on the 11.3T Early Deployment Release. Delivers AS5300 Voice/Fax Feature Card and Multimedia Conference Manager functionality.

11.3 MA

Based on the 11.3 Major Release. Introduces support for the Cisco MC3810.

11.3 XA

Based on the 11.3T Release. Delivers platform enhancements in advance of 11.3T. All maintenance for this release are provided in subsequent maintenance releases of 11.3T. For example, new functionality would appear on 3600 platform in an 11.3XA release but would be maintained in subsequent 11.3T releases. This release is focused on delivering the Cisco 2600 and Cisco uBR7246 Universal Broadband Router platforms to market.

Based on the 11.3 Major Release. Introduces new features and platform support. See also the section.

11.3 DA

Provides feature support for the 6200 DMT Subscriber Line Card and the STM-1 Network Trunk Card.

11.3 AA

Based on the 11.3 Major Release. Introduces support for the Cisco AS5800 Universal Access, the Cisco 7200 Series Router, the Cisco AS5300 Universal Access Server and the AS5200 Universal Access Server.

11.2P

Based on the 11.2 Major Release. Used to deliver additional platform support, such as Cisco 1600 and 3600 series routers.

11.2 GS

Based on the 11.2 Major Release, and is directly parented from 11.2 P. Introduces support for the Cisco 12000 GSR.

11.2 BC

A special release vehicle dedicated to release new CIP features.

11.1 IA

Based on 11.1 Release. This release is used to deliver DistributedDirector functionality only. It is not a router image and does not provide routing functionality.

11.1 CT

Based on 12.0 Release. Used to deliver Tag Switching feature.

11.1 CC

Based on the 11.1CA release. Delivers additional interfaces and platform enhancements on the Cisco 7200 and Cisco 7500 series routers. It also some new features such as Cisco Express Forwarding (CEF).

11.1 CA

Based on the 11.1 Major Release. Used to deliver additional interfaces on the Cisco 7000, 7200, 7500, and RSP7000 series routers.

11.0 BT

Based on the 11.0 Major Release. Used to deliver TN3270 server functionality. This functionality is now available in the 11.2 Major Release.
