The exponential growth in IP data traffic is forcing service providers to upgrade their point of presence (POP) with higher-performance, scalable Layer 3 backbone switch routers. In order to keep costs down for their network expansions, Internet service providers (ISPs) are looking for cost effective Fast Ethernet solution for connecting their Web Hosting Equipment like Web Servers, Cache Servers etc. to the POPs Cisco 12000 Series router. The new FE line card designed address this application space is offered with two interface types: an Eight-port 100BaseFx multimode fiber interface or an Eight-port 100BaseTx copper interface.
The primary applications for the Fast Ethernet Line card are:
Web Hosting Equipment like Web Servers, Cache Servers etc. connectivity: Provides a cost-effective solution for connecting Cisco 12000 Series router to Web Hosting Equipment like Web Servers, Cache Servers etc., reducing the complexity and eliminating extra components from the network.
Intra POP connectivity: Provides a cost-effective solution to interconnect Cisco 12000 series router to other switches/routers such as Catalyst (R) 5000, 6000, and Cisco 7500 router within a POP.
Peering: Provides a cost-effective solution for public and private peering.
