Gigabit Ethernet Interface Processor (GEIP)

Gigabit Ethernet Interface Processor (GEIP)

The Gigabit Ethernet Interface Processor (GEIP) integrates a VIP technology-based intelligent processor with a media specific solution, providing a complete, single-slot solution for Gigabit Ethernet connectivity in the Cisco 7500 series router.

The GEIP provides moderate performance capabilities, appropriate for campus, enterprise edge and WAN aggregation applications. When used on the campus, the Cisco 7500 series router with the GEIP connects the enterprise WAN and legacy LANs, such as FDDI or Token Ring, to the Gigabit Ethernet campus backbone. At the enterprise edge, the Cisco 7500 with GEIP provides WAN to campus backbone connectivity. When the Cisco 7500 series router is used for WAN aggregation, the GEIP provides intra-pop connectivity between the Cisco 7500 series router and high-speed WAN core devices, such as the Cisco 12000 series router.

Feature

Benefit

IEEE 802.3z Standards-Compliant

Enables connectivity with any standards compliant Gigabit Ethernet device, such as switches or the Cisco 12000 Series Routers.

Standard GBIC Module Interfaces:

GBIC Online Insertion & Removal (OIR)

Provides flexibility in network design with reach capability up to 10 km. Hot-swappable GBIC unit enables change or replacement without the need to power down the line card.

Supports IEEE 802.1q frames (tagged or untagged mode)

GE link can be used as a VLAN trunk.

Ethernet Inter-Switch Link (ISL) encapsulation

Cisco-proprietary protocol, for a technology similar to IEEE 802.10 in that it is a method of multiplexing bridge groups over a high-speed backbone.

Support for IP Quality of Service (QoS)/Class of Service (CoS), including CAR, ACL and MPLS/tag switching

Enables traffic engineering solutions to increase network utilization and provide basis for offering differentiated class of service models.
