For cable operators implementing a DVB/DAVIC (Digital Video Broadcast/Digital Audio Visual Council) strategy, Cisco provides a single system comprising cable modem and a headend for support of both cable modems set-top boxes. A key benefit of this approach for cable operators is cost-effectiveness. Cisco enables a multiservice platform to be built for TV, data communication and eventually telephony without duplicating equipment for each service and without having to duplicate technicians, engineering resources, training or measuring equipment. No other DVB/DAVIC equipment vendor is as advanced in its product development or as familiar with the technology as Cisco. The complete Cisco DVB/DAVIC system consists of: Cisco INA2320 Interactive Network Adapter, a DVB/DAVIC headend Cisco DVB CAR100 Series Cable Access Router, a stand-alone cable modem developed according to the EuroModem specification These components, together with the Cisco uBR7200 Series Universal Broadband Router, can form a single system or function as individual components interoperating with other DVB/DAVIC standards-based equipment. A key benefit for cable operators is cost-effectiveness.
The Cisco INA2320 Interactive Network Adapter is a headend unit controlling bi-directional broadband data communication over the HFC network. The Cisco INA2320 is a modular system built into a standard 19 in. chassis with a compact PCI backplane. The Cisco INA2320`s modularity and scalability allow it to be configured according to a cable operators` specific needs. The Cisco INA2320 is able to handle both In-Band (IB) and Out-of-Band (OoB) devices and is also compliant with the DVS167 specification included in the OpenCable standard, allowing cable operators to take advantage of built-in DAVIC 1.2/DVS167 features for set-top box deployments. It is therefore an optimal solution for managing both cable modems and interactive set-top boxes on the same network. This important feature lends the system great diversity. Given the potential for adding set-top boxes to the same headend, cable operators can get more value from Cisco products than from any other vendor. Also, with the Cisco technology solution, which enhances the DVB/DAVIC standard implementation, several quality of service (QoS) levels can be assigned to the cable modems, including best effort and committed data rate. Cable modems can send data using contention mode (similar to the technique used in local area networks), reservation mode where the modem is granted a certain amount of bandwidth under INA control or fixed rate mode, which is well suited for time-critical services. The QoS engine takes full benefit of the different access modes supported by the INA2320 and allows for service level differentiation: a key feature to maximize revenues. The Cisco INA2320 is scaleable by increasing the number of channels to a maximum configuration of 1 downstream and 8 upstream channels. This provides a compact device with the ability to control communications for a very large pool of users. New Products: Cisco INA2320 and Cisco DVB CAR100 Series

Key Features and Benefits
Cisco INA2320
|
Feature |
Benefit |
|---|---|
|
IB and OoB support |
Unique selling point: the same downstream module can be configured for either operation |
|
Standard Compliance IB: DVBv2 & Euromodem OoB: DAVIC 1.2 & OpenCable DVS167 |
Open standards guarantee an open market and drive prices down |
|
1 downstream and 8 upstream channels |
Highly integrated architecture provide cost effective solution |
|
QoS: up to 32 profiles, one profile/modem |
Cisco`s QoS engine guarantees bandwidth usage control and allow the MSO to differentiate its offering thus maximizing revenues |
|
Access Network Routing |
Unlike competitors` solutions this will minimize the traffic between the INA and the access router |
The Cisco INA2320 allows two configurations including:
An entry-level solution supporting 1 downstream and 4 upstream channels for a pool of cable modems/set-top boxes
A highly cost-effective solution for heavily loaded networks, supporting 1 downstream and 8 upstream channels.
The smaller configuration can be expanded from 4 upstreams to 8 upstreams.
A cable modem is a device that allows high-speed data access (for example, to the Internet) via a cable television network.
The Cisco DVB CAR100 is a cable access router (static) or "cable modem" between the hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) network and the Ethernet with one or a number of PCs connected. It enables bi-directional data communication at high bit rates. The Cisco DVB CAR100 is connected to the INA2320 interactive network adapter over the HFC network or to any other DVB/DAVIC compliant headend that has been interoperability tested. The Cisco DVB CAR100 provides an ideal solution for bringing broadband access to residential users and small business environments. It is based on the EuroModem specification.

Feature |
Benefit |
|---|---|
|
DVB/DAVIC compliant, EuroModem (Class A) |
Meets the requirements of cable operators who have decided to go for a DVB/DAVIC EuroModem |
|
IP Routing |
Less traffic on the HFC network and also reduces traffic on the LAN. |
|
Supports PAT (network address translation at port level) |
End-user: security in the form of a simple firewall. Fewer global IP addresses as these are not required on local PC. |
|
Direct IP |
Meets requirements as of 1 Jan 2000 according to the DVB/DAVIC standard. Direct IP gives better performance than Ethernet MAC framing. |
|
Upstream frequency range: 5-65 MHz |
The high frequency range is useful, as it is less noisy than the low frequency range. |
|
8 MHz bandwidth |
Supports the most widely deployed bandwidth in European broadcasting networks. |
The Cisco DVB CAR100 Series can be ordered for a single PC as CAR100-PC or for multiple PCs on a LAN as CAR100-LAN.
