The Catalyst 8500 CSR family of Campus Switch Routers provides the next-generation switching paradigm for both switching performance and critical network services. Including support for all IP and IPX routing standards, the Catalyst 8500 CSR family of campus backbone switches offers a complete suite of sophisticated features. The Catalyst 8500 CSR family contains several key components of the new enterprise campus network architecture, providing for high-speed performance, resiliency, quality of service (QoS), and security within the network backbone. With new ATM and Packet-over-SONET uplinks, the Catalyst 8540 CSR delivers metropolitan area network (MAN)/wide area network (WAN) solutions with scalable performance, lower cost of ownership, and the features needed in New World Networks. The Catalyst 8500 CSR family offers a complete set of campus-required features such as Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP), Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) for multicast routing, and a full set of routing protocols, including Routing Information Protocol (RIP), RIP version 2, Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (IGRP), Enhanced IGRP, and Border Gateway Protocol (BGPv4). As QoS mechanisms become more important in the campus, the Catalyst 8500 CSR family provides, in its first phase, four queues per port based on IP precedence. In the following phase, the Catalyst 8500 CSR family will provide support for a more granular method of determining QoS and ensuring minimal latency and packet loss for mission-critical applications. The Catalyst 8500 CSR family delivers the performance, scalability, and robustness required for network production backbones. The Catalyst 8510 CSR delivers wire-speed IP and IPX performance for all ports, scaling to 6 million pps. The Catalyst 8540 CSR delivers the same wire speed functionality for IP and IPX, scaling to 24 million pps. With the Catalyst 8500 CSR family, Cisco ensures investment protection and migration to new technologies. The Catalyst 8510 CSR offers redundant power supply modules and uses the same power supplies used for the Catalyst 5000 and LightStream 1010 chassis. The Catalyst 8540 CSR provides a high level of system redundancy, providing for redundant switch fabrics, route processors and power supply modules. Wire-speed performance, scalable control, and rich QoS capabilities of the Catalyst 8500 CSR family allow network managers to smoothly integrate the Catalyst 8500 CSR with the Catalyst 8500 MSR, Catalyst 5000, Catalyst 6000, Cisco 7500/7200, LightStream 1010, BPX 8600, MGX 8800, IGX 8400, MC 3810, and the 3600/2600 product families. Using a Cisco end-to-end solution, they can create a unique solution that truly meets the end-to-end QoS requirement for differentiated services in the enterprise. The Catalyst 8500 CSR allows smooth integration into existing networks by incorporating Cisco IOS-based routing protocols (IGRP, EIGRP, OSPF, and BGPv4) that are proven, time tested, reliable, and fast converging Layer 3 backbones. New ATM and Packet-over-SONET uplinks for the Catalyst 8540 CSR enable new metropolitan area network (MAN)/wide area network (WAN) applications. These new features and enhanced Layer 3 features supported on the 8500 CSR family are described below. Catalyst 8500 CSR Campus Switch Router

Wire-Speed, Low-Latency Switching for IP, IPX, IP Multicast, and Layer 2 Bridging |
Catalyst 8510---6 million pps, 10G nonblocking switching fabric Catalyst 8540---24 million pps, 40G nonblocking switching fabric |
Nonblocking performance means that the total switching capacity of each Catalyst 8500 series platform is greater than what is needed to switch the total traffic load across all the respective interfaces simultaneously, even if all the traffic is to be routed. |
|
Cisco Express Forwarding (CEF) |
Same switching paradigm used to scale Cisco 7500 and GSR 12000 series routers by isolating control plane (routing) and data plane (switching) |
CEF, designed originally to solve Internet scalability issues, provides needed scalability to emerging enterprise intranets and applications. |
|
Hardware-Based Routing Tables on Each Port |
Cisco`s highly optimized lookup algorithm, the FIB, is downloaded to the ASICs on each line card |
This optimized algorithm, together with the CEF architecture, ensures that the route processor is free to keep the network topology consistent and to converge quickly in the event of topology changes or link failures. |
