This section describes some of the hardware modules available for the Catalyst 5000, the Catalyst 5002, the Catalyst 5505, and the Catalyst 5500 multilayer switching systems.
Supervisor engine I or II or III
The supervisor engine modules support Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching and enable network management to provide a completely manageable switching system that delivers high-performance switching for even the most demanding workgroup applications.
The supervisor engine module contains to help two fast Ethernet interfaces for redundant connections to switches, routers, and servers. You can choose dual 100BaseTX and MII, or 100BaseFX in dual multimode, or dual single-mode uplinks. The media-independent interface frame-switching backplane accommodates Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, and ATM simultaneously. Further, with Cisco`s Fast EtherChannel technology, the two ports can be configured as a single 400-Mbps, fault-tolerant connection.
The additional benefits of supervisor engine II include support for Fast EtherChannel and Token Ring Switching modules, increased network management performance, and a daughter card that can be upgraded to support NetFlow switching.
The additional benefits of supervisor engine III include the same as supervisor engine II plus a tripling of the switch fabric capacity and modular uplink capabilities with Gigabit Ethernet (ready) support.
10BaseT Ethernet switching module
The 10BaseT Ethernet switching module supports 24 or 48 dedicated segments; each can be assigned to a different VLAN. Telco and RJ-45 interfaces are available.
Group Ethernet switching modules
Group Ethernet and Fast Ethernet switching modules provide a method to divide users into managed switch groups. Group switching combines hub-costing and network management on one module; it is an alternative to shared-media hubs. The 10BaseT 48-port group switching Ethernet module has four 10BaseT Ethernet segments, with groups of 12 users per segment. You can switch each group of 12 ports to any Catalyst 5000 VLAN. Similarly, the 24-port group switching Fast Ethernet module has three 100BaseT Ethernet segments with eight users per segment.
Token Ring modules
Implementation of Token Ring switching increases the effective bandwidth tend stations without obsoleting installed Token Ring network interface cards (NICs) or the network`s wiring infrastructure. The Catalyst 5000 Token Ring module supports IEEE 802.5r specifications. This specification defines standards for the direct attachment of end stations (via concentrator port) to the switch and for the transmission of data at half-duplex (4/16 Mbps) and full-duplex (32 Mbps) speeds. These capabilities allow network administrators to microsegment overloaded ring segments and to provide dedicated switch ports for high-performance file servers. Shielded RJ-45 ports support both 150-ohm shielded twisted pair (STP) and 100-ohm unshielded twisted pair (UTP), providing wiring infrastructure flexibility.
The multimode fiber Token Ring module supports the IEEE 802.5j standard for ring-in/ring-out (RI/RO) compliance as well as the fiber lobe attachment of end stations over a 2-km drive distance. The fiber ports also support the proprietary RI/RO signaling used for attaching to the IBM 8230 and the Olicom OC-3610 Controlled Access Unit.
Both the copper and fiber Token Ring Switching modules require supervisor engine II or higher to be installed in the catalyst switch.
10/100BaseTX Fast Ethernet switching module
The 10/100BaseTX module supports autosensing and autonegotiation, which sets the appropriate speed and duplex mode (half or full) for the switched connection and adapter interface.
ATM LAN Emulation modules
The ATM LAN Emulation dual PHY module delivers fault tolerance for critical network applications via two unique features:
Dual-homed ATM: Dual PHY ATM allows network administrators to deploy redundant connections from one uplink port. Similar to FDDI dual homing, the Catalyst 5000 dual PHY module provides link redundancy by duplicating the data link with a primary and secondary interface. If connectivity is lost on the primary interface, data connectivity automatically switches over to the redundant secondary interface.
LAN Emulation (LANE) server redundancy: Each Catalyst 5000 ATM LANE module delivers redundant LANE services using Cisco`s LANE simple server redundancy protocol (SSRP). Cisco`s SSRP allows the enterprise-wide deployment of ATM by removing LANE servers as a single point of failure.
ATM Switch Processor (ASP) module (Catalyst 5500 only)
The ASP module has a field-replaceable feature card and a 100 MHz MIPS R4600 processor running Cisco IOS software. The ASP supports a wide range of port adapter modules for a variety of ATM interfaces.
Route Switch Module (RSM)
Each RSM delivers integrated inter-VLAN routing on the backplane of the switch, improving network traffic patterns. The WS-5302 route switch module, the latest member of the Catalyst 5000 series of line modules, provides the performance, scalability, and sophisticated multiprotocol capabilities of Cisco IOS software integrated into the award-winning Catalyst 5000 switch series.
This variety of interface modules offers the flexibility to accommodate today`s dynamic network topologies and the scalability to meet bandwidth, speed, and application advancements today and in the future.
