Catalyst 2900 Series XL Software Release 11.2(8) SA3 is new software that supports port-based Virtual LANs (VLANs) in all Catalyst 2900 Series XL desktop switches. With this new software Catalyst 2900 XL switches support up to 64 separate intraswitch VLANs (non-ISL-trunks). This capability allows data packets to be forwarded only to those stations within a specific VLAN, creating a virtual firewall between VLANs. Cisco Visual Switch Manager, easy-to-use management software for the Catalyst 2900 XL, is also enhanced in this software release. Used with any standard Web browser, Visual Switch Manager enables real-time viewing and management of a collection of Catalyst 2900 XL switches through visual maps. Software Release SA3 is embedded in all new Catalyst 2900 Series XL switches. The software is also available as an easy upgrade via Cisco`s Software Center. Product Overview
The Software Release 11.2(8) SA3 provides the following major enhancements to the superior manageability, versatile modularity and outstanding performance of the Catalyst 2900 Series XL switches:
Visual Switch Manager. Cisco Visual Switch Manager is an easy-to-use web browser-based application which provides the ability to view and manage a collection of four Catalyst 2900 XL switches and to support a logical "stackable" switch family.
64 port-based VLANs. Release SA3 allows up to 64 overlapping port-based VLANs within the switch. This does not include ISL trunking. An instance of Spanning Tree will run on each VLAN to prevent undesirable loops in the network and minimize broadcast domains. Ports may belong to multiple VLANs.
12 groups of Fast EtherChannel. The number of FEC bandwidth aggregation groups per switch is increased to 12. This allows a high-performance FEC group for every two ports on a 24 port Catalyst 2924 XL.
Network Port. The network administrator can designate a switch port that does not learn addresses. This enables the Catalyst 2900 XL to operate in large, flat networks with unlimited MAC addresses.
Hot swap modules. The Catalyst 2916M XL allows hot swap insertion and removal of all modules without first having to power cycle or reset the switch. This enables the network to operate productively during field repairs and upgrades.
CGMP Fastleave. Allows quick stopage of multicasts to stations that stop caring about a data stream (in some cases). Requires IGMP v2 in end stations. This helps eliminate superfluous traffic on the network.
The Catalyst 2900 Series XL Software Release SA3 is available on all fixed and modular versions of the Catalyst 2900 Series XL switches.
