The Cisco AS5800 is a high density, high performance carrier class dial access concentrator. Highly reliable hardware design coupled with the breadth and depth of Cisco IOS allows service providers and large enterprises to deliver multiple dial services while reducing operational costs. The AS5800 provides a solution for medium to large dial points of presence (POPs) in a single, integrated product. It leverages the high-density, high-performance Cisco 7200VXR router platform and Cisco`s industry-leading IOS software providing cost-effective scalability. As a component of Cisco`s Dial Access Stacking Architecture, AS5800s can scale into large dial POPs with a single management infrastructure. The AS5800 is designed to provide density, scalability, and a rich set of IOS services. Due to its highly modular architecture and the ability to be stacked with other Cisco dial products, the AS5800 provides service providers with maximum investment protection. High Scalability: 1344/1440 hybrid asynchronous/ISDN dial ports in a single box, capacity to grow to 2016 total hybrid channels and beyond. High availability, hot swap, redundant power supplies, redundant blowers, redundant modems. This improves network and service availability, reducing time and money lost due to network outages. System Controller Management Hardware and Software. Manages large dial POPs providing a single entity for local data collection, reducing costs of operations. Differentiated Services (IOS Support) Cisco IOS software gives service provider customers the opportunity to offer new, competitive services beyond basic Internet dial, such as virtual private networks, multiple class-of-service levels, multiprotocol service, and richly detailed billing information. Customers can benefit from enhanced bandwidth optimization techniques such as data compression and can deploy high-quality network security firewalls and data encryption. The AS5800`s distributed processor architecture is unique in that it provides Cisco`s latest dial shelf technology in conjunction with proven router technology, the highly successful Cisco 7200VXR. The AS5800 provides all the hardware components service providers have come to expect from carrier class products and all the routing, WAN, and quality of service features which have been the hallmark of Cisco routing products. The AS5800 utilizes a totally new Dial Shelf (DS) technology which provides line as well as call termination while the Router Shelf (RS) is allowed to devote full attention to routing protocols and management duties.
Communication between the dial shelf and router shelf is provided via an extended (redundant) architecture pioneered by Cisco. This new architecture allows the dial and router shelves to function as a single platform running only one IOS image, thus providing proven router hardware and software in conjunction with DSP based modem technology. This marriage provides the best possible combination of digital modem, access server, and router technology eliminating any administration and management frustration than can accompany multi-box solutions. The DS5814 contains fourteen slots that can accommodate line (trunk), modem and controller cards. There are 12 port T1, 12-port E1 and 1-port T3 line cards available. Up to four T1/E1 trunk cards or two T3 cards can be used simultaneously. 144 port modem cards are available, and up two controller cards for 1:1 controller redundancy.
AS5800 modem cards support 144 modems, for a maximum capacity of 1344 modems in a two T3 configuration. All modems are pooled, so that any incoming call can be terminated on any modem. The AS5800 uses the same Cisco MICA modem technology as the AS5200 and AS5300 access servers. Each 12-port T1/E1 card terminates 360 ISDN calls, so any T1/E1 system has 100% analog/digital call coverage. The T3 card supports up to 256 ISDN calls. The modems are implemented as software running on DSPs, so all upgrades are software only. All popular modem standards are supported, including V.90, K56 Flex 1.1, V.34+ and speeds down to 300 baud. The AS5800 includes three redundant fans for cooling. If any fan module fails, the other two spin faster to maintain airflow. Redundant DC and AC power options are available. The DS5814 supplies -48V DC power to each card, providing a power system that is highly reliable. For AC environment, a 200-240VAC redundant AC-DC power converter is available. The AS5800 Dial Shelf Controller Card provides the high-speed external backplane connection between the Dial Shelf and the Router Shelf. This card connects to the Dial Shelf Interconnect in the Router shelf. A 5 ft (1.5 m) cable is included. A 20 ft (3 m) cable is available as an option. Two dial shelf controller cards can be used to provide one-to-one controller redundancy. The DS5800 supports channelized T1 and PRI interfaces. The CT1 trunk card provides physical termination for up to 12 T1/Primary Rate Interface (PRI) lines, includes channel service units (CSUs), and connects directly to the telco network. You can put up to four cards in the DS5814. Cables for connecting the T1 card to the network are available separately. The AS5800 supports E1 interfaces with PRI and R2 signalling. The CE1 trunk card provides physical termination for up to 12 E1 lines and connects to an external network termination (NT1) device. You can put up to four cards in the DS5814. Cables for connecting the E1 card to the network are available separately. The AS5800 supports up to two channelized T3 (CT3) interfaces. Each CT3 interface delivers up to 672 calls. The card contains 144 digital MICA modems. The modems are implemented as software running on a DSP, allowing simple software upgrades of modem technology in the field. All popular modem standards are supported, including V.90, K56 Flex 1.1, V.34+ and speeds down to 300 baud. Cisco offers two levels of modem management to customers, basic and managed modems. The basic modems offer a wealth of features, often beyond what is offered by the competition. The managed modems offer superior reporting and statistics, including the ability to troubleshoot and monitor modem connections on individual modems or groups of modems while calls are in progress. If you decide to utilize the managed modem features on the AS5800, you have to purchase the Modem Management Technology License appropriate to the number of modems being utilized. If the modem count exceeds a given quantity, you need to purchase the next higher quantity license. The Router Shelf for the AS5800 is based on the Cisco7206VXR router.
