The Cisco 6400 is a new generation of carrier-class service gateways that enable network operators, post, telephone and telegraphs (PTTs), and Internet service providers (ISPs) to breakthrough digital subscriber line (DSL) profitability barriers by delivering a new generation of on-demand high-speed high-quality new world services. The Cisco 6400 service gateway consists of a fault-tolerant mid-range ATM switching core and multiple fault tolerant routing engines. The ATM switch, based on Catalyst 8500 + Per-Flow Queuing (PFQ) technology, provides the necessary ATM switching and traffic management capabilities, while the router blades, derived from the successful Cisco 7200 router, enable the service provider to offer scalable Layer 3 services, described below. OC-3/12, STM1/4 ATM, and future other high-speed interfaces, connect the Cisco 6400 to dial access servers and DSLAMs, as well as into ATM Core switches, BPX, or backbone core routers, Cisco 12000 series packet. The Cisco 6400 is designed for use in high-availability environments such as operating companies` central offices (directly or via colocation), ISP offices, and corporate premises. As such, it includes switch, router, and line card redundancy, as well as 12-inch packaging (key for central office deployment). The Cisco 6400 offers a unique ability to make the access media (xDSL, cable, wireless, and narrow-band dial access) transparent to service providers to enable the dynamic selection and delivery of dedicated network services. Services such as secure access to corporate networks (for both voice and data services), high-speed Internet access, multipoint videoconferencing, streaming video, and entertainment-driven traffic are supported. Generally, a central office includes multiple DSLAMs and an aggregator is needed to provide termination of huge amount of PPP sessions and re-direction of traffic to different destinations. For this application Cisco 6400 has been deployed widely in the central offices. The Cisco 6400 may reside within the operating company`s (directly or via colocation) infrastructure to aggregate traffic from DSL access multiplexers (DSLAMs), DSL traffic from multiple access providers, and traffic from other access media. In essence, it is the intelligent equal access point that allows a multitude of operating companies and service providers access to the end users. In addition, the Cisco 6400 may reside at the network edge between the operating companies and ISP or corporation, providing the aggregation of sessions and tunnels as well as service and network selection capabilities required in the delivery of advanced broadband services. When deployed by a wholesale DSL service provider, the Cisco 6400 service gateway allows users to dynamically select on-demand services. It then switches user traffic to the selected services, applying full-edge routing and QoS policies. As a full-IP and ATM edge device, it forwards the traffic simultaneously to multiple IP domains, after preparing it for delivery to core networks, such as those powered by the Cisco 12000 Gigabit Switch Router (GSR) and Cisco BPX 8600 product families. The Cisco 6400 Series universal access concentrator represents: A quantum leap in bridging and session scalability in simultaneously supporting over 14,000 Ethernet Bridged, PPPoA, PPPoE, or combinations of subscribers through one fully configured system. A modular platform capable of being configured to service up to 2,000 subscribers in its entry level configuration and quickly and cost-effectively expanded, as business grows, all the while delivering the highest performance and lowest-cost per subscriber session in the industry. Scalability as a virtual router that enables service providers to simultaneously route end-user traffic over secure, independent pathways to up to 3500 different domains (or end-destinations) - with roughly 55,000 packet-per-second for each session, scaleable to higher performance, handling even the most bandwidth-intensive broadband traffic. Flexibility in service architecture as it can support L2TP tunneling and PPP termination with multiple routing domains. Integrated portal capabilities on the Cisco 6400 universal access concentrator allow service providers to use existing Web-based software programs to create customized network "portals" or services screens, and offer subscriber, even individual family members, their own services portfolio Integrated, flexible accounting software options that allow service providers to carefully track all the services enabled by the product Cost effective traffic aggregation which includes DS3, OC-3/STM1, OC-12/STM4, FE IP and ATM quality of services (QoS)/Class of Service (CoS) support including ABR, CBR, and VBR as well as CAR, WFQ, WRED, and RSVP Integrated service selection gateway Scalable SVC & PVC support- up to 32000 VCCs NEBS certified Fully redundant Full Cisco IOS support Cisco 6400 Series Broadband Aggregator
