New Product: Cisco ONS 15516 — Optical Filter Solution

Product Overview

The Cisco ONS 15516 has two components, which provide the user with a 9- to 18-wavelength, scalable DWDM solution. The base filter assembly, the Cisco ONS 15516 red filter, is a passive unit comprised of a 200 GHz 9 x 1 wavelength unidirectional multiplexer (mux) and a 200 GHz 1 x 9 wavelength unidirectional demultiplexer (demux) operating in the 1547 to 1561 nm frequency band. The mux and demux systems connect to independent fibers in the carrier"s fiber facilities through the common ports on the chassis faceplate. The base unit integrates two expansion ports, providing the ability to upgrade, in-service, from 9 mux/demux wavelengths to 18 wavelengths. Also, the base unit incorporates two monitor ports, allowing the user unobtrusive access to the muxed and demuxed signals for monitoring or analysis.

The second component is the upgrade filter assembly, the Cisco ONS 15516 blue filter. This is a passive unit comprising a 200 GHz 9 x 1 wavelength unidirectional multiplexer and a 200 GHz 1x9 wavelength unidirectional demultiplexer operating in the 1531 to 1543 nm frequency band. The upgrade filter connects via its front-panel common connector ports to the base unit"s upgrade ports via user-supplied optical patch cords. Together, these two filters provide the user with a compact, flexible 9- to 18-wavelength DWDM filter solution, which complements the capabilities of the Cisco ONS 15454.

Key Features and Benefits

Simple, Low Cost, and Highly Scalable

The Cisco ONS 15454 allows service providers to leverage their fiber optic facilities to support greater quantities of bandwidth and customer traffic. Deploying the Cisco ONS 15516 filters is simple, fast and easy. Their compact size allows installation in space-restricted environments. Adding additional wavelengths is as simple as plugging patch cords in a fiber patch panel. Upgrading from 9 to 18 wavelengths requires nothing more than interconnecting the base red coupler to the upgrade blue coupler using their upgrade ports. This allows new services to be turned up quickly. Here are just a few of the other exciting features of the Cisco ONS 15516 optical filter solution:
