Cisco ONS 15304 — Optical Transport Extender

Cisco ONS 15304 — Optical Transport Extender

Product Overview

The Cisco ONS 15304 is an optical transport extender that allows service providers to extend optical transport capabilities to customer premise facilities.

The Cisco ONS 15304 Optical Transport Extender combines the powerful data features of Cisco IOS software with the ring capabilities of a Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) Add/Drop Multiplexer (ADM). The Cisco ONS 15304 allows provisioning of native private line E1 as well as next-generation, high-margin, data-based services using a single redundant platform deployed in the existing service provider transport network.

Highlights

Key Features and Benefits

TDM and Data Service Delivery on Existing SDH Networks

Fiber is widely deployed in service provider networks in metropolitan areas and additional deployment continues. However, today`s SDH ADMs are not designed to address the increasing demand for the dominant revenue-generating data services. Widespread deployment of these services prompts the need for data-intelligent customer located equipment (CLE). The Cisco ONS 15304 combines the features of a Cisco IOS software-based bridge or router and a SDH ADM in an integrated platform that is deployable from the edge of the network. Service providers benefit from enhanced bandwidth utilization through the use of wideband packet over SDH technology. The Cisco ONS 15304 provides private line E1 as well as data-aware 10BaseT Ethernet ports for service delivery. The Cisco ONS 15304 operates with a G.813 compliant (2.048 MHz) clock with full support for synchronization status messaging (SSM). A unique autoprovisioning feature provides fast and easy system turnup.

Fully Interoperable Standards-Based Design

Designed to be deployed directly on the service provider network infrastructure, the Cisco ONS 15304 is engineered on accepted industry standards from the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). The Cisco IOS software-based data processing features comply fully to existing IETF RFCs as well as relevant Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) standards.

Cisco IOS Software and Element Management

The Cisco IOS software has emerged as the industry`s accepted standard for internetworking at all points from the desktop to the Internet backbone. The Cisco ONS 15304 is another platform that leverages this functionality. Therefore, operations personnel trained on Cisco IOS software will find it very easy to provision and manage the Cisco ONS 15304 saving significant training costs for service providers. The SNMP agent software in the ONS 15304 supports standard MIBs and can be managed by the Cisco Transport Manager (CTM) or by industry standard SNMP managers.

Table 14-17: Features and Benefits of Cisco ONS 15304

Feature

Description

Benefit

Integration of Private-Line and Data Capabilities within an SDH ADM

Consolidation of data-equipment and transport ADM into a single network element.

Reduction in network cost and complexity.

Scalable Data Bandwidth

End customers can subscribe to data connections in 2 MB increments. As their needs grow, additional 2 MB increments can be remotely provisioned.

Service activation of additional bandwidth can be performed from a remote location and without equipment replacement. On-site upgrade/maintenance is not required, speeding the service delivery interval.

Data Transmission Across Carrier-to-Carrier Boundaries

Because PPP/MLPPP streams are encapsulated by framed E1s, data services can be seamlessly transported across carrier-carrier interfaces in a multiple of formats: within an E3 or as (multiple if MLPPP) E1s.

This allows the carrier to create and offer services beyond their traditional network boundaries.

Transport Layer Survivability

The system supports transport layer protection according to the ITU Recommendation G.841.

The carrier can integrate the product into an SDH network and provide physical layer protection for higher services availability.

Automatic Smart Alarming and PM (ASAP)

The system automatically turns on performance monitoring and alarming when service is applied.

Traditional configuration of E1 services requires the carrier to provision the service twice. Once where the carrier validates the service (and then turns off alarming and PM) and again when the end-customer turns up service (where the carrier turns alarming and PM back on). With ASAP, service is only provisioned once.

Fast and Automatic System Turn-up

The system supports auto-provisioning allowing craft-persons to quickly install and provision the system for service. The craft mounts the system and connects the facilities, enters the system into service, assigns a system name and IP address. Once this is done, ring service is up and all system provisioning can be performed from a remote operations center.

Faster service provisioning allows providers to quickly install and turn-up equipment for services delivery.

Integrated System Security

The system supports three security levels for system users: Administrative, Provisioning and Maintenance.

The system supports integrated security that prevents unauthorized craft and end-customers access to the system.
