Introduction

Cisco ConfigMaker is an easy-to-use Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, and NT 4.0-based software tool designed to configure a small network of Cisco routers, switches, hubs, and other network devices from a single PC. ConfigMaker is designed for resellers and network administrators of small to medium-sized businesses who are proficient in LAN and WAN fundamentals and basic network design.

Cisco ConfigMaker automatically creates configuration files for Cisco routers, switches, and hubs while you create a diagram of your network. The device and connection wizards prompt you for information about the devices and connections on your network in an easy, step-by-step manner, and then use that information to create the configuration files for your devices.

With the AutoDetect Device Wizard, you can simplify the adding of devices to your Network Diagram by using it to identify the device model and any installed network interface cards, and by using it to read any existing configuration. The VPN Wizard helps you define Virtual Private Network (VPN) connections on your network using the IP Security (IPSec) protocol. The Firewall Wizard helps you define a firewall between your network and its connection to the Internet or the Corporate Network. You can use the Network Address Translation (NAT) feature to define static or extended static translations to devices on your network. The Deliver Wizard delivers device configurations over the network or by using the COM port on your computer.

To learn more about Cisco ConfigMaker, view the online tutorial or select Help > Cisco ConfigMaker Help Topics from the menu bar. The help system provides detailed information about the application and the technologies and products that it supports.

Note Cisco ConfigMaker does not configure every IOS parameter available for each device; it helps you to configure the most commonly used IOS parameters. To add additional IOS commands to a device configuration file, select the device properties page for a device and click Append config commands.

Using Cisco ConfigMaker

Cisco ConfigMaker makes it easy to address and configure one or more devices or to create an entire network of devices. The basic steps in the Cisco ConfigMaker process are:

As you create your network diagram, a series of wizards and dialog boxes appears. For example, when you add modular devices, you are prompted to enter network modules, WICs, and VICs so that the software reflects the same hardware configuration as the device. When you draw connections between devices, a customized connection wizard helps you set connection parameters.

After creating, addressing, and securing your network, you can deliver configurations to the devices by using the COM port of your computer or the network. Network delivery requires the device to have an existing IP address assigned to it.

You can view, save, and print your configuration files. You can also save a bitmap image of your Network Diagram.

Creating a Network Diagram

Cisco ConfigMaker develops configuration files based on how you draw the network and on your entries in the device and connection wizards. This section shows you how to draw the network, address it, set security profiles for its networks and devices, and deliver configurations to those networks and devices.

Drawing the Network

When you draw a network, you must first add your devices and then add connections between the devices. You do this work in the area labeled Network Diagram.

Adding Devices Using the Device Wizards

    1. Click a device to select it from the Devices list box. Use the scrollbars to scroll through the Devices list and find any devices that are out of view. Click the plus and minus symbols to maximize or minimize the Devices list for each device type. The cursor changes shape to include the device icon when a device is selected.

    2. Move your pointer to the Network Diagram area in the center of the Cisco ConfigMaker application.

    3. Click in the Network Diagram to add the device.

Note You can disable the device and connection wizards and use Cisco ConfigMaker as a drawing tool by selecting View > Options > Advanced and deselecting the Enable Device Wizards when adding a device and Enable Connection Wizards initially when making a connection check boxes. Wizards can be reenabled at any time by selecting these options later.

    4. Name the device and click Next.

    5. Continue entering information into the Device Wizard pages, clicking Next to proceed to the next wizard page.

    6. If the device selected is a modular device, the Device Wizard - Indicate Cards Installed window is displayed. Indicate the hardware installed in your device by selecting the Network Interface Cards (NICs), WAN Interface Cards (WICs), or voice cards from the drop-down lists that correspond to the slots in which the cards are installed.

Adding Devices Using the AutoDetect Device Wizard

    1. Select Configuration > AutoDetect Device from the menu bar.

    2. Select whether to identify a device connected to the COM port of your PC, or connected via your LAN.

Note Your network must be running IP and the device must already be configured with an IP address for it to be detected over the network.

    3. Click Next.

    4. If you selected a connection over the network, enter the host name or IP address of the device.

    5. Click Next.

Note The AutoDetect Device Wizard identifies only the device hardware. It does not read or display any existing configuration files.

    6. To add the device to the existing Network Diagram, click Finish. The wizard places the new device in the existing Network Diagram. You can also start the Read Configuration Wizard which will read any existing configuration from the device by clicking Next.

Viewing Device Properties

When you have added a device to the Network Diagram, you can view and edit information about that device, such as its name, delivery status, or generated Cisco IOS configuration commands, with the Device Properties dialog box. To display Device Properties, double-click the device in the Network Diagram.

Making a Connection Between Two Devices

    1. Click a connection type from the Connections list box on the left side of the screen. The cursor changes shape to include the connection icon when selected.

    2. Click a device in the Network Diagram. The device you choose must support the selected connection type on at least one of its interfaces. At least one of the supported interfaces must be available to support the connection. When clicked, the device icon displays green selection bars and there is a clicking sound.

    3. Click a second device.

    4. Click Next to go forward through the wizard dialog boxes. Click Back to return to a dialog box and change your entries.

Note You might need to obtain specific information from your service provider to complete a connection wizard. Use the WAN Configuration Worksheets to help you obtain the information you need. Select Tools > WAN Configuration Worksheets from the menu bar, and select the worksheet for the connection type you are making.

Note If when making a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection you click on the second device, the connection will show that it goes through the Internet or Corporate Network icon. You must first add WAN connections to the Internet or Corporate Network before making a VPN connection.

Viewing Connection Properties

Once you have created a connection between two devices, you can view and edit information about that connection, such as the IP address, by viewing the connection properties. To view connection properties, double-click the connection in the Network Diagram.

Securing Your Network (Optional)

A security policy defines who has access to a particular network or device. The Firewall Wizard helps you define policies for the router connected to the Internet or Corporate Network. You can define policies for each network or device connected to this router and any host connected to a network connected to this router. A network is defined as an Ethernet LAN, hub, or switch.

To set the security profile for a network or device:
