Introducing the Documentation CD-ROM Package

Welcome to the interactive library of technical product information from Cisco Systems. The CD-ROM package includes this booklet and two discs that contain the following documentation in HTML format:

Ordering Information

You can purchase Cisco's subscription service to receive monthly Documentation CD-ROM updates throughout the year. As a subscriber, you replace your current CD-ROM package with a new package each month, so you stay up to date with the latest product information.

Installation Instructions

This booklet describes system requirements and explains how to install and access the contents of the Documentation CD-ROMs using Verity Mosaic to view the information. It contains the following sections:

After completing this installation, you can access further information from the Cisco Documentation home page. Click the underlined text, Using this CD-ROM, under the heading "About the Documentation CD-ROM," to read about the user interface and about navigating the Documentation CD-ROM. Refer to the online "Service and Support" section for information on how to order the Documentation CD-ROM.

Before You Install the CD-ROM

The installation utility on the Cisco Documentation disc will install the following software on your hard drive:

To take full advantage of the features of the CD-ROM, we recommend installing all of the listed items. Netscape Navigator is required, unless already installed on your system, and Verity CD Web Publisher is always required.

Macintosh Installation Instructions

To install and start the CD, perform the following steps.

    1. Insert the Browser Software Installer disk (Disc 1) into your CD-ROM drive. In a few seconds, the Cisco Documentation Installer window will pop up automatically. If the window does not pop up, navigate to the CD and double-click on the autorun file.

    2. Click the "Install Software" button and follow the installation instructions on your screen.

    3. When the installation is complete, click the "Launch Documentation CD" button on the Cisco Documentation Installer window. Netscape will launch and additional instructions will be displayed (and are summarized below).

    4. Quit Netscape and remove the Browser Software Installer disk from your CD-ROM drive.

    5. Insert the Cisco Documentation disk (Disc 2).

    6. To access the CD contents, click the "Launch CD" icon located on your desktop.

    7. When you are done, quit Netscape and remove the CD.

Windows 95/NT4 PC Installation Instructions

To install and start the CD, perform the following steps:

    1. Insert the Browser Software Installer disk (Disc 1) into your CD-ROM drive. In a few seconds, the Cisco Documentation Installer window will pop up automatically. If the window does not pop up, navigate to the CD and double-click on the autorun.exe file.

    2. Click the "Install Software" button and follow the installation instructions on your screen.

    3. When the installation is complete, click the "Launch Documentation CD" button on the Cisco Documentation Installer window. Netscape will launch and additional instructions will be displayed (and are summarized below).

    4. Quit Netscape and remove the Browser Software Installer disk from your CD-ROM drive.

    5. Insert the Cisco Documentation disk (Disc 2). The launcher window will pop up automatically. If not, see step 1.

    6. To access the CD contents, click the "Launch Documentation CD" button.

    7. When you are done, quit Netscape and remove the CD.

UNIX Installation Instructions

To install and start the CD, perform the following steps:


Note You do not need root level privileges to perform this installation. However, you must have read/write permissions to all chosen directories.

    1. Insert the Browser Installer Software disc in the CD-ROM drive.

    2. Mount the CD-ROM drive1 as follows, entering your CD-ROM device name in place of device_name:

    3. After the CD-ROM is mounted, change the directory as follows:

    4. To run the installation script, enter the following command:

    5. Enter appropriate responses to the prompts that appear as the installation script runs.

    6. When the installation is finished, the Netscape Navigator browser and the Verity search software (LaunchCD) will be launched. Additional instructions will appear in the browser window, and are summarized below.

    7. Quit Netscape and LaunchCD, and change directories to the Verity software directory as follows:

    8. Remove disk 1 from your CD-ROM drive and insert disk 2. Make sure you mount disk 2 to the same location you did for disk 1 during installation.

    9. From within the CiscoCD directory, type the following command:

    10. When you are finished viewing the CD, quit Netscape and LaunchCD.

    11. To access the Documentation CD in the future, repeat step 9.

Troubleshooting Your Installation

If you have any problems during installation, refer to the README file. For further assistance, contact the Cisco  Systems Technical Assistance Center (TAC). The TAC can be reached 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as follows:

Solaris Troubleshooting

If the CD does not mount automatically, the vold daemon might not be running. This daemon manages the CD device and automatically mounts the CD. Verify that the vold daemon is running by entering the following command:

ps -e | grep vold | grep -v grep

If the system does not display anything, vold is not running. Enter the following command to launch the vold daemon:

/usr/sbin/vold &

After the CD is mounted, return to Step 3 of the section "UNIX Installation Instructions" to complete the installation.

1If there is no CD-ROM mount point, contact your system administrator to create a root level directory called /cdrom.
2Your patch level may require slightly different syntax. See the "mount" man page. The CD must be mounted in "cdcase" format for proper installation.
